Where do you start? Most people visit Google and do a search, and obtain everything under the sun as options. So how do you limit the choices to something which is useful for your group?

Determine the objective of Your Activity

First, let's cover what "team building" is. Unfortunately, the word team development can mean almost anything. It's a lot like "leadership" or "customer service" in that all these terms is extremely general. However, should you narrow down the focus, you'll more likely look for a better solution. For example, if your leadership problem is that whenever your executives retire or quit, your organization includes a tough time developing new executives, your leadership solution might focus around succession planning. Should you own a restaurant, and your customer support problem is that customers are waiting too much time to receive their food orders, your customer service solution might involve faster food prep or even more efficient ordering procedures. The point is when you hire a motivational speaker to fix your leadership problem or force your restaurant staff to go to customer support workshops, the actual problems will probably persist.

Team development solutions may have a similar challenge. To find a good solution, ask yourself a few questions to determine the ultimate reason for the activity.

   So so why do we really wish to accomplish a group building activity, anyway?
   Are we rewarding employees?
   Are we searching for a method to add some fun to some dry agenda?
   Are there challenges that we need to solve? If so, what are the specific challenges?
   If this activity worked perfectly, what results would we predict?

Activities for Reward or Fun

In case your group already works really well together, and you're simply looking for a method to reward your employees or add some fun into the normal workday or meeting, then almost any fun activity will probably go over pretty much.
